Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the urban landscape of cities in the Balkans in the Ottoman Empire before and during the modernization period. Recent research has critically evaluated traditional terms classifying cities of the Muslim world generally as “Muslim city”, of the Ottoman world as “Ottoman city”, or in the Arabic world as “Arabic city”. But also terms such as “Balkan city” and even more classifications such as “Bulgarian city” or “Serbian city” have become under critical scrutiny by attaching alleged specifics of the urban space of the late Ottoman Empire to emerging national states.
