Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to explain the discourse of the Slovakian President, Ivan Gašparovič, by making its seeming banality, superficiality and vacuousness its primary analytical focus. The authors attempt to map and classify the motives present in the discourse of President Gašparovič in order to explore the logic and meaning of his instrumental presentation of the institution of the presidency and of himself as a consensual and civic candidate. The authors attempt to present these traits of the presidential discourse as a specific, not necessarily conscious discursive strategy with a rather adverse depoliticizing/mythologizing effect.
