Summary/Abstract: The emergence of oftentimes violent neo-Nazi groups in this country is just one of the many changes that have occurred in Czech society following the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Aggressive behavior in and of itself has also become more frequent here. Sociologist Alena Vodáková partly attributes these rising levels of violence to greater freedoms enjoyed by Czechs in comparison with the suppressive tendencies of the former totalitarian regime. Like the aforementioned article by Jan Urban, Vodáková’s essay demonstrates the difficulties and insecurities facing Czechs as they continue to abandon the rigid certainties of the past and struggle to create a responsible, civic society.
