Summary/Abstract: The problem of the category of number and also of the pluralia tantum, is discussed in Polish grammar coursebooks as well as in theoretical and onomastic articles. In spite of frequent opinions relating to defectiveness of the category of number in proper names with regard to the singularity of the person or object, even in scientific elaborations the term plural instead of appropriate: pluralia tantum is used. The pluralia tantum number is one of the determinants of onomization (transition from the category of common names to those of proper ones) and of transonomization i.e. the change of the class of proper names, often being accompanied by the change of inflexional paradigm and the gender of a noun e.g. from the masculine-personal to the non-masculine-personal one (anthroponym → toponym). The introduction of the pluralia tantum number, both in individual studies and dictionaries ewill automatically correct the data concerning the (fictitious and too much expanded) ambiguity of the given nounsf (Jadacka 2006, 169).
