Summary/Abstract: Speakers of Polish intuitively understand the word ‘osoba’ (person) in the term ‘nazwa osobowa’ (proper name) which functions in linguistic literature as a concept that is self-evident and not requiring any definition. As a result, researchers do not decide whether Polish proper names should refer only to people or mainly to people. This lack of explanation is most conspicuous in lexicoraphical works. Such a conclusion can be drawn after an analysis of dictionary entries which provide information on proper names. The general indicators, such as ten, kto, ktos´, kto, istota are used without any hard and fast rule or limitation. On the other hand, the indicators that identify the semantic scope of dictionary entries are often used at variance with their meaning. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish types of proper names basing only on the information given by the dictionaries.
