Summary/Abstract: This essay explores some of the problems involved in using Western theoretical models to explain the process of social and cultural change in post-Communist countries. Up to now sociologists from the newly independent states have not generally offered theoretical analyses of the societies they inhabit, preferring instead to present work with a purely descriptive character.
