Summary/Abstract: It is a commonplace that a great city and its country are two different worlds. This is particularly true where the sheer quantitative proportions, or rather disproportions, are striking. Such is the case with the central territories of the Habsburg empire (later the Austro-Hungarian Empire) or rather their successor states of Austria and Hungary. After the peace treaties that concluded the Great War, Vienna, the old Imperial city, and Budapest—which had grown particularly fast after the 1867 Ausgleich or Compromise—became the capital cities of countries that had shrunk considerably both in size and population.
