Summary/Abstract: This article deals with action and refl ection of the Croatian intellectual and philosopher Stjepan Zimmermann during the Second World War. In addition to his social engagement in the Independent State of Croatia, it has to be said that his thoughts were directed to the foundation of the new Croatian state and Europe from a philosophical perspective. The Second World war is understood as “the crisis of culture”, that is to say, the crisis of Western or European culture and all its values. Moreover, in his intellectual effort, Zimmermann made criticism of all ideologies of his own time. These ideologies rose up the different relative categories like race, nation, class or state, instead of God. In returning to humanism which should have a Christian orientation, Zimmermann viewed only possible chance for cultural regeneration post-war European world. Zimmerman was also a consistent opponent of both Ustasha and Communist regime and their totalitarian concepts.
