Summary/Abstract: The reviewer ponders over the book of an exile writer Witold Gombrowicz Vspom-nienia polskie [The Polish Remembrances] about the meaning of history, role of a historian and the distinction between historical truth and personal evidence. Gombrowicze considered his profession to be a service to his nation and thus he rather preached than discovered historical reality. The reviewer is aware of the recent transformation in the understanding of the role of a historian. Although, a historian loses his unique position of a guard of 'historical truth', still he plays a significant role in interpreting national history.
