If you understand, your fate will be not so painful_The story of Jiří Bezděk

Summary/Abstract: The young idealist departs to teach Czech compatriots living for a generation in the now Soviet Union and, thanks to the fact that he stands out above the local average, becomes along with teaching colleagues the victim of the Stalinist repression at the turn of the 1920s. Aft er spending many years in the Gulag and in exile, from where he returns aft er appeals from the Czechoslovak government, he gets back in time to experience the occupation of his homeland by the German army. Thanks to his experience, he is misused in an anti-Soviet campaign that aft er the war leads to another trial on charges of collaboration. While he is freed, he does not escape the trials of the 1950s and, for a change, now fi nds himself in a Czechoslovak Communist jail.
