Summary/Abstract: The present essay refers to Shmuel Trigano´s recognition of the fact that the Old Testament employs two words with slightly different meanings to designate "desert": midbar and semama. This duality also appears at the time of the emergence of monasticism in the deserts of Egypt. It was Saint Benedict who gave the most genuine Western interpretation of the desert-tradition. His Rule applies and integrates the experiences of the desert for Benedict recognises the lasting value of this heritage. He also realises that Europeans find their desert elsewhere than Africans do.
