Summary/Abstract: This year from March to the middle of June the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts organised a Giacometti exhibition of an unusually large scope. For this occasion, the present essay provides a survey on the sculptor´s oeuvre from an early surrealist period to his existentially motivated mature stage after World War II. On having drawn a portrait of the artist, the author of the present essay investigates the foreshadowings of this important change by analysing some of the exhibited pieces of art. The essay also depicts the intellectual-philosophical environment of Giacometti´s chief works of art. The "astral forms" that re-shape the human body surge from the experience of the cataclysm of the war. They express the artist´s intellectual ethos, which can be summarised in one single word: compassion.
