Summary/Abstract: The article approaches the conflict between Protestants and Catholics for the leadership of Satu Mare town. The majority of the town’s citizens were Protestants but, because the Habsburg Administration controlled more and more the free royal towns, the catholic religion had spread out. In the middle of 18th century a new catholic offensive has begun, after some previous attempts. The new catholic royal town headsman was a client of Kàrolyi noblemen, who were the richest landed gentry and the supreme headman of the county. A financial investigation was followed by repressive measures against Protestant Church. The upper forms of the protestant gymnasium have been cut off. The conflict had also a symbolic aspect and it broke out with the occasion of building dwelling for officers. The army which was stationed in town has been seen as a threat by the Protestants because it represented the central power (the catholic one). In the head of the protests’ action was the old protestant town’s elite but their action was condemned to fail.
