Summary/Abstract: Founded in 1833, the town of Turnu Severin led to the creation of a new religious centre in the Western part of Walachia and, then, of Romania. It is a centre with multiple contributions both to the development of the modern town as residential centre of the Mehedinţi County and as a religious place for this part of Oltenia. During the communist regime the Church had to preserve alive the ancient faith, as well as to defend its patrimony, especially the cultural one. As soon as this period ended, the Church of Severin received again an increased educational, social, cultural and pilgrimage role in the life of the Romanian Orthodox Church, when the Episcopacy of Severin and Strehaia was recreated here after the year 2000.
