Summary/Abstract: The paper to be presented discusses the changes that occurred in the field of social assistance from medieval to modern times. It follows the development of the public and private institutions that are meant to help those in difficult situations. The study traces the development of social assistance with particular regard to its relationship to the church. It takes into account the changes that occurred in the extent the church was involved in the concerns of the time related to the poor and miserable, also during the time when management of these concerns was taken over by the municipality. The study regards in parallel the changes occurring both in Europe in general and in Transylvania in particular. The last part of the paper points towards the diversification of social assistance in modern times and the major changes that took place in its relationship to the church, the churches of Transylvania.
