The Linguistic Form of Memorial Obituaries

Summary/Abstract: The objective of the article is to present the linguistic form of press obituaries. About 10 400 obituaries from daily newspapers have been used here. The author discusses genre features, basic construction features, the language and optional parts of the announcements: epithets of death anniversary and death circumstances, identification of achievements, information about the mass, a request for a moment of reflection and prayer, the address of the mourning house, initial and final formulas. The study has resulted in the general observation that the language used in this kind of announcements is not varied and the form is limited to a few basic syntactic patterns, which have similar, little emotional intensity.
