Summary/Abstract: The economic protectionism at the end of the XIX-th century was supported by the liberal laws passed between 1881 and 1887. Parliament debates are important sources for a realist analysis of the economic and political principles that underlied the protectionist attitude during the period in question. The principles of protectionism and free exchange represented the for and against arguments in the debates concerning the law of 1887, a landmark in the Romanian economy of the XIXth century.
