Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the empirical research of environmental attitudes. It was based upon questionnaire on the sample of 364 examinees from five cities located on the river Danube. The ecological awareness was analyzed through its three dimensions: environmental knowledge, environmental values and environmental behavior intention, with starting hypothesis that, due to the social context, theese dimensions still dont represent a coherent unit. The second hypothesis was that examinees have wider knowledge and awareness on regional aspects of ecological problems, as an effect of geographical and ecological connection between the cities of their residence. The first hypothesis was confirmed - the results shows discrepancy between environmental knowledge, values and behavior intention of the examinees. They have extensive environmental values annd knowledge, but their potential for social mobilization in the system of ecological protection is very low. The second hypothesis was not confirmed. Environmental attitudes of the examinees are to a large extent "localized" and limited to aspects of their everyday experience and surrounding. Main results of the inquiry are situated in a broader social context and related to findings derived from other sociological inquiries in those fields.
