Summary/Abstract: Review of the book: Maria Zadencka’s Obrazy suwerenności. O wyobraźni politycznej w literaturze polskie XIX i XX wieku, Wydawnictwo IBL PAN, Warszawa 2007 [‘Images of Sovereignty. On political imagination in 19th and 20th-century Polish literature’]. The book under review discusses the political meaning of Polish literature. The theoretical backgrounds are the works of Carl Schmitt and Michel Foucault, and contructivist investigations in political discourse (Larry Wolff, Inventing the Eastern Europe). Zadencka describes the presence of early modern political thought (Hobbes, Bodin, Grotius) in Henryk Sienkiewicz’a and Józef Mackiewicz’s novels, and many other literary works. Her book proposes a new method for a study of relationships between literary and political discourse and imagination, which could be compared to Hayden White’s Metahistory.
