Summary/Abstract: The objective of the current study is to explore the psychosocial dimensions of Roma communities from the North-East of Romania. By method of semi-directive interview we investigated the following aspects: acknowledgment of national, ethnic and religious identity, the Roma - majority population relation and their mutual perceptions (stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, segregation etc.), social and geographical mobility, religion, participation to the social-political life and awareness about minority-focused laws etc. The analysis of data gathered pointed out the difficulties of Roma to state openly their ethnic belonging and the mechanisms of identity management depending on the social context in which they are located. Furthermore we studied the impact of social, political and economic transformations in Romania on Roma communities and also the evolution of the majority population attitude towards the Roma ethnic group, during the same period.
