Summary/Abstract: It is known that two dimensions underlie judgments of people and groups. The authors show the interest of a new approach of these two dimensions (named social desirability and social utility). For this new approach, the two dimensions are learned in and patterned by social evaluation (at school, at the university, at work). Two definitions are proposed and three kinds of researches are presented. First, researches planed to validate the proposed definitions. Secondly, researches in which the two dimensions were associated with other aspects of people's social value (their occupation or their normativity). Lastly, less specific researches of evaluative approach (researches on intergroup evaluation). These researches give the same results than those obtained by other researchers, more particularly Fiske and her colleagues.
