The availability of loans to enterprises during the economic crisis

Summary/Abstract: The global financial crisis, which began in 2007 and has had its second wave from September 2008 (the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers), reached Polish economy as well. A negative effect of the crises on the Poland’s economy is shown – inter alia – in introducing tighter restrictions on the availability of commercial loans. Based on survey studies of enterprises and surveys carried out among senior loan officers, the article shows that from the fourth quarter of 2008 the availability of loans to enterprises decreased substantially. Tightening banks’ credit policies were not caused in the first place by the condition of a potential borrower but by a situation in the financial system and the fear for future performance of the economy.
