Summary/Abstract: Information asymmetry is one of the most important determinants of capital structure decisions. Information asymmetry is not directly observable. A result is that none of variables described in literature represents a clear measure of asymmetric information between inside and outside investors. The main aim of this article is to introduce the idea of creating a synthetic measure of the degree of information asymmetry, using the analysis of complex phenomena. We present various characteristics that are expected to be related to information asymmetry and that could be used to build the synthetic measure. An important obstacle to the use of a wide variety of variables in the proposed method is a limited access to data.
