Summary/Abstract: Media are treated as the main instrument of (post)modern socialisation and education. In media sphere, there are many images of violence and violence of images known as an iconic violence. In the article, much attention is paid to a description of some strategies of educational prevention connected with media literacy and Kijkwizer, the Dutch Rating System for Audiovisual Production. It has been in use since early 2001 to provide information about the possible harmful effects of movies, home videos and television programs on young people. To describe the basic tendencies in the contemporary ways of analysing media products, the author employs four strategies used in the process of decoding media texts, which are very useful, especially for revealing the mechanism of the iconic violence working. These strategies correspond with the latest theoretical proposition of the critical paradigm in cultural and social studies represented by Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu.
