Summary/Abstract: Escaping from the imprisonment of the suburban housewife duties, Anne Sexton’s development into a confessional feminist poet in a conventional patriarchy is unparalleled. Through poetry her self-consciousness flourished, and thus she had the short-lasting independence she so much strove for. The paper examines Sexton’s ambivalent feelings towards her parents and also the similar relationship she had with her own children, arguing that through her writing she actually recreated the memory of her past traumas, in a language loaded with sexual imagery and incestuous behaviour.
