Summary/Abstract: The name of Sylvia Plath has become almost synonymous with suffering and tragic death, not only because of the depression and suicide that are the trademarks of her life,but also because of the close correspondence between the facts of her life and the motifs of her poetry and prose. Various answers have been given to the question of whether and to what degree her literary achievements can be considered as symptoms or catalysts of her final suicidal act. Nonetheless, the poet and her writing continue to baffle literary critics and psychiatrists alike.
