Summary/Abstract: Intonation is present in every language. Furthermore, it performs the most important functions of language. Despite its universal character, intonation is at the same time one of the most language specific phenomenon. Accordingly, intonation of every language is original, possessing its typical features, its specific phonetic characteristics as well as functional possibilities. Naturally, the level of intonation investigation of different languages varies considerably. Intonation of the English language is said to be one of the most deeply analysed. Therefore, in this article using the descriptive method the historical background to English intonational studies distinguishing the most important stages of its investigation as well as methods applied are analysed. Furthermore, the current status of the investigation, the systematic perception of the English intonation as well as problems of analysis is presented.
