THE POLITICAL LIFE IN THE KINGDOM OF SERBS-CROATS-SLOVENES UNDER THE DILEMMA BETWEEN FEDERALISM & UNITARIANISM (1918-1929)

Summary/Abstract: In this article the political struggles between supporters of unitarianism and federalism in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes will be described. The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was established as a parliamentary monarchy on 1 December 1918. The main political discussion in the Kingdom was how to organize the state’s political structure. In this context basically emerged two opposing views. One of them was unitarianism which was supported by Serbs and the other was federalism which were advocated especially by Croats and Slovenes. After the consideration of centralistic Vidovdan constitution on 28 June 1921 the legitimacy of the newly founded state has disappeared. After this point, the crisis of legitimacy began in the state. The crisis of legitimacy almost continued throughout the history of Yugoslavia in the 20th century.
