Summary/Abstract: The paper shows how the letters of the known Dutch humanist Hugo Grotius (1583–1645) are giving extra information about the Thirty Year’s War and the look of Dutch politicians on the lands of the Czech Crown. The so-called „Winterking“ Frederick Vth of the Palatine was regarded by the Dutch as a real king, even if he was exiled. Bohemia had the aureole of a country where Protestantism had its roots. The correspondence of Grotius with Casaubonius, Cameriarius and especially Charles Marini are witnesses of real interest in religious circumstances in Bohemia. Grotius was very well informed also about military operations in the Czech lands that were seen as important for Dutch politics.
