Summary/Abstract: Between 1998 and 2002 new political parties in some countries of the post-Communist Europe experienced abrupt electoral success. In trying to understand how and why the new parties succeeded, questions related to the appeals they have used, the kind of people they have mobilized, and the reasons for their attraction to these appeals must be asked. Even though a complex answer to this question is not the ambition of this article - we will only focus on Slovakia – it’s safe to say that one explanation for their success lies in their active anti-establishment appeal in the form of non-extremist centrist populism.
