Summary/Abstract: The paper evaluates the impact of populist instrumentalization of symbols connected with national/ethnic identity by the Slovak and Hungarian political elites on the bilateral relations between Slovakia and Hungary. By pointing at some concrete cases, which appeared after the electoral victory of anti-Mečiar coalition in 1998 the author highlights the quest for nationalist-populist appeals in the Slovak and Hungarian political discourses. While the populist use of nationalist features also influenced the practical conduction of foreign policy of these two countries, its importance lies mostly in the field of domestic politics.
