Summary/Abstract: The aim of paper is to retrace the theoretical perspectives that had impact upon Lajčiak's (1875 - 1918) sociological ideas presented in his book Slovakia and Culture. Lajčiak's interest in sociology dated back to his study of Semitic languages (Leipsic) and theology (Sorbone) when he got acquainted with works of Spencer, Durkheim and others. He was inspired mainly by liberal theories of social development that fitted his personal conviction of the creative power of individual activity in social life. Their impact is clear in his reflection on a possibility of social and political change in Slovakia.
