Summary/Abstract: Modernization in Crisis - from Talcott Parsons to Jürgen Habermas. The purpose of the paper is to revive the discussion of concepts of modernization and to clarify relations between the concepts of modernization and modernity. Its begins with critique of Parsons's theory as unable to explain the lasting conflicts and patologies, and as ignoring historical contingencies that cause the variance of recurrent processes of rationalization, mobilization and secularization. It reviews the contribution of Habermas and Touraine to theory of modernity, and especially Habermas's concept of life world and concludes with hypothesis that either new organizational compromises or renaissance of social movements would be possible outcomes of the present contest for the meaning of modernization.
