Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a previously unknown copy of the Golden Legend (Legenda aurea sanctorum, sive Lombardica historia) by Jacobus de Voragine kept in the treasury of the Franciscan monastery in Široki Brijeg, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the role of the most important medieval hagiographic text in forming the western devotion and infl uence it had on iconographic choices in art. Particular attention is given to newly discovered incunabula in Bosnian-Herzegovinian heritage - Legenda aurea sanctorum, sive Lombardica historia [Liber sanctorum ac festorum per totum annum] published by Manfredus de Bonellis, de Monteferrato from Venice in the year 1493. Furthermore, the text discusses the original context in which manuscript was made in thirteenth century, its contemporary reception and historical path from the medieval bestseller up to the fi rst critics (which already appear in the fourteenth and fi fteenth century), condemnation of the work and its hard survival during the period of Counter-Reformation in sixteenth century and re-awakened interest in the Golden Legend in nineteenth century.
