Summary/Abstract: The data upon which this article is based were collected in 1932-33, through fieldwork research done in the area of Porche in Macedonia, at that time a part of Yugoslavia. The major part of the research was done in the village of Vo1che (31 households, around 170 inhabitants), near Gostivar, 30 miles South-West from Skopje. This is a village community, which has still not suffered by the contemporary changes. This article focuses upon the ways in which religion contributes to the group cohesion and integration of the village community in a traditionally agrarian society. It makes an analysis of the social functions of religion, focusing upon the relation between the organisation of the ritual activities and the social structure of the community.
