Summary/Abstract: Models of economic growth, which is responsible for wealth of the countries, are becoming ever more elaborate, trying to include human factor. Economics, as a discipline, is becoming more open, drawing from cultural and institutional studies. These advances coincide with the transition to knowledge economy, observed in the developed and emerging countries. Consequently, yhe ways of organizing enterprises and the relevance of contemporary factors of production like capital, land or even workforce skill are changing.The concept of the social capital tries to shed new light on the evolving enviroment and despite its early stage of development and methodological challenges, it seems to have certain explonatory power when facing undergoing changes. At the same time, the concept of social capital seems compatible with theories presented by social networks like Facebook, understudied especially in the social capital context. Apart from theoretical framing, some empirical data on the penetration of social netorks in 21 European Union countries are presented, followed by a brief discussion regarding causality and further possible direcions of inquiry.
