Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses some methodological problems of the research on communal eating, the focus being not so much on its economic explanations, but on philosophic-sociological analysis of Georg Simmel. Parallel to that, the author shows also the historical limitations of the usage of Simmel’s model, especially in the context of late modernity and postmodernity. The paper draws the limits of the civilisation model, too, according to which the transition from nature towards society and culture coincides with the transition from the homemade, natural, organic feeding without strict rules, to the civilized, aesthetic eating, firstly realised in the festive culture and in the high society. At the end, the focus is on the different usages of communal eating concepts in the Bulgarian and Western contexts: the meanings of those concepts in Bulgaria are mostly related to more naturalistic interpretations of communal eating, than on its abstract regulatory functions.
