Summary/Abstract: The subject of this essay is the image of the night within Roman Augustan poetry. It observes the main topics in love poetics and it claims that the night is desired, fearful, full of mythology figures. The erotic poetry is also .poesia docta. and provides a kind of mixture between ratio and fascination, between passion and violence. It represents the social world of the day in Roman society, but reversed, in the opposed way. The poet loses the .urbanitas., the Roman virtue of boldness and manliness, being a slave to his beloved. Thus the love night of Roman poetry tries to escape from the Roman social day, but always represents its tension.
