Summary/Abstract: As far as Romania is concerned, this author believes that any comprehensive analysis designed to explain the way in which the regime began co-opting large strata of the population as of the early 1960s must address two issues of paramount significance: modernization and nation-building. This paper argues that the nation-building process in Romania was continued under communism.
