Summary/Abstract: This article concentrates on the origins and history of the linguistic issues in sophism. The sophists’ influence was rooted in their mastery of language. They were experts in the practice and theory of rhetoric, and in what we now call linguistics, i.e. the study of the form and grammar of language. The aim of this article is to examine the successfulness of the linguistic theories developed by one of the biggest ancient sophists - Protagoras. It appears that Protagoras was not merely trying to analyse and describe established Greek language. His aim was basically to correct this language. The purpose of this article is also to explore a different approach to the concept of linguistics in antiquity. This is merely based on the fact that the origin of linguistics lies partly in the same reasons as produced sophism.
