Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on how restrictive measures were enforced by Jesuit superiors general and provincial superiors on school theatre practice in the beginning of the eighteenth century. Three excerpts from circular letters (1709, 1715 and post-1715) by the provincial superior of the Bohemian Province Jacob Stessl (1658–1723) are analysed and compared and their impact on the theatrical activities at Jesuit schools examined. The author concludes that the enforcement of regulations required a long-term sustained effort and that superiors had to repeat their orders. It is demonstrated that some of the regulations were frequently ignored or circumvented. An edition of the analysed texts is provided in an appendix to the article.
