Summary/Abstract: This study of the value of Norwegian public libraries applies an economic method for nonmarket valuation. The background for an economic approach is the very restrained economic situation in the public sector generally and especially in the local public sector, i.e. the municipalities. In Norway, all municipalities are by law obliged to provide and fund the local public library service. Internationally, a continuous economic pressure on public budgets is familiar and has resulted in a growing urge to document the value of public goods, including the value of libraries. Clear and accurate statements of benefits from use of public money on libraries are needed. The context of my study is two major challenges for the libraries today.
