Summary/Abstract: Fift y one years ago, the largest amnesty for political prisoners was announced in communist Czechoslovakia. On 10–12 May 1960, 5601 political prisoners (i. e. 64% of a total of 8708) walked free from the gates of their prisons. How extensive was this amnesty? Which prisoners did it concern? How did the totalitarian regime evaluate the amnesty? And what were the experiences of political prisoners once they returned home?
