Summary/Abstract: The article analysed the presuppositions of the philosophy of culture in Antanas Maceina. On the ground of a hierarchical scheme of classical ontology, culture is placed by Maceina between nature and religion This intermediate place determinates the possibility and ambivalence of cultural activity. The paradoxical character of culture is expressed by its tragedy. In his cultural activity, man does not only remake nature but pursues religion as well. Still the representative and symbolic character of culture does not mean its rejection for the sake of some natural or religiuos reality. One can understand the playing side of cultural being when abandoning a basical notion of substantial reality. The artical aims to show how the objective-methaphysical and phenomenological-hermeneutical notions of culture interwine in Maceina’s philosophy of culture.
