Summary/Abstract: Piracy off the coasts of Somali Peninsula (Horn of Africa) deserves special interest — in view of its intensification (turning it into an international security threat) and because this is the first instance where the international community takes so extensive common efforts towards effective mechanisms to combat the phenomenon on the political, military/policy and legal levels. The response of the international community is precisely what makes this a so important element in the overall picture of piracy. This response may bring about a solution transcending the local confines and, perhaps, proving effective in other circumstances, too.
