Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of political Islam and its radical forms in the North Caucasus. It primarily focuses on terminological and conceptual shifts that are often influenced by the lack of analytical objectivity, as well as conscious misuse. Authors claim that the threat of Islamic radicalism in the region has been not infrequently misinterpreted in a purposed way as the destabilization potential of Islamist groups is usually lower than deemed. The study is based on both secondary sources and original research, as well.
