Summary/Abstract: The recent edition of the academic grammar, GLR3, shows that the authors decided to approach the personal verbal moods on the ground of modality. As vehicles of modal meanings, the personal moods, expressing opinions, directives or desires, should be all treated in accordance with the new perspective, that is from a semantical point of view. Hence, the term conditional, justified on a syntactic basis, is no longer suitable. In our opinion, it should be replaced by potential. The term potential would cover properly the register of episthemic values rendered by the forms of this mood, corresponding to the formula <uncertain>, but <possible>. In this respect, the present article is an argumentation for the necessary change of terminology.
