Summary/Abstract: The articles concerns itself with Hungarian poets Lórinc Szabó (1900–1957) and Attila József (1905–1937) placing them within the context of «accelerated» history of modernity and the specific Hungarian lagging behind the changes, and ascribes new value to their role on both planes. Taking as a starting point the assumption that few Hungarian writers and literary works, particularly lyrical, have been attributed appropriate literary merit, as a consequence of different ideological approaches and the related disregard of the “subversive potential” of lyrical language, the author employs a subtle linguistic analysis to prove the aesthetic value of the two modern “classics” considered to be among the best world poets.
