Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the mechanisms through which the totalitarian system started to control the family rituals which gradually led to a unified model of funeral rituals (1970s). The problems of death as a personal and family event which was turned into an institutional and public event are discussed as well as the different stages of this process; the reasons for introducing a unified national funeral model etc. The conclusion points out that the communist ideology in its attempt to counteract the church ritual established anew one which resembled the former church ritual.
