Summary/Abstract: We are interested in the period (1878-1912) characterized by the contradiction between strict patriarchal moral and legally existing brothels in numerous Bulgarian towns. At this time an outbreak of sexual diseases was observed. The public opinion considered prostitution as the main reason for these infections which had a negative effect on it. There were discussions in the prostitution was a crime or not; and if soq what measures need to be taken. The study also concerns with state regulation of the chant-cafes in Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Rouse etc.
